Frequently Asked Questions

How did you get started in stone carving and how long have you been in business ?

Ferree Studios has humble beginnings. In the year 1986 the creator and owner of Ferree Studios (Wayne D. Ferree) started producing stone carvings for the Washington National Cathedral gift shop. NW. DC.

At the time he was employed as a stone carver at the National Cathedral under the direction of master carver Vincent Palumbo.

When his work was ended at the Cathedral due to its completion by 13 carvers and 8 masons. Wayne moved with his lovely wife and sons to Scranton, PA where he continued to pursue his stone carving career as Ferree Studios.

Ferree Studios for the past 17 years has been based in Northeastern, PA and is conveniently located south of Nicholson PA on state route 92. Due to hard work and a small group of faithful wholesale clients, Ferree Studios has grown and is now poised to reach a larger market.

How do you carve stone ?

Stone carving is a process that begins with an idea or concept. A stone of appropriate size and quality is then selected for the project. By using visual aids such as drawings, photos, and/ or  models the carving is begun and taken to a finished product in a series of steps.

The process is facilitated by the use of saws, chisels, hammers and files. With diligence, concentration, and a little luck the project goes as planned and the chips fall where they may.

What is the time frame for completing a project ?

Projects are completed on a first come first serve basis. When you contact us we will give you a time frame for producing your project. Producing quality stone work takes time and planning. Start your project today.

Time is commensurate with the complexity of your project. We ask three to four weeks for small projects like bird baths and garden benches, six to twelve weeks for life-size figure work, etc. Email us with your project ideas.

What is the payment schedule for a project ?

Ferree Studios requires a 50% deposit on all projects. Upon completion of the project the remaining 50% payment is  required. All installation and/or delivery charges and applicable taxes will also be due.
